Event Details

Above, Council Members Tony Avella and Peter Vallone, Jr. talk about LOHV's bill to ban cruel rodeo events and practices at a press conference on October 13th, 2004.

2004: A Year of Political Victories for Animals

This was a year of political victories for animals. In 2004 we:

  • held our second annual New York State Animal Protection Lobby Day where dozens of activists joined us in Albany on a cold snowy day in March.
  • held the ever New York City Animal Protection Lobby Day Lobby Day where we trained activists on two bills before the Council we are endorsing; hosted a breakfast with Council Members and their aides; held a press conference on the steps of City Hall attended by more than 60 activists, two Council Members and radio and TV reporters.
  • had our anti cruel practices and events in rodeo bill (Intro. 472) introduced by Council Member Tony Avella. It now has fourteen sponsors in the City Council.
  • helped to elect two new State Senators, Jeff Klein and Jose Serrano, who will sponsor animal friendly legislation; and helped to reelect State Senator Liz Krueger, a strong animal advocate.
  • found great office space at 404 Park Avenue South.
  • added hundreds of new supporters to our database.
Now it’s time to celebrate!

About the Guests of Honor

Council Member Tony Avella. The League has worked closely with Council Member Avella for more than a year now on our bill to ban cruel rodeo events and practices in New York City. In 2003, the League endorsed him in his bid for the City Council and he subsequently won. In October 2004, he introduced to the City Council Intro. No. 472 at a well attended press conference on the steps of City Hall.

Senator-Elect Jeff Klein. The League endorsed Jeff this year in his bid for the State Senate. While serving in the Assembly for the past decade, he co-sponsored bills to ban foie gras production, ban canned shoots and make cruelty to wild animals a felony. Jeff’s going to keep up the good fight in the Senate.

Senator-Elect Jose M. Serrano. Serrano, currently a City Council Member and sponsor of every AR bill in the Council, will be moving to the State Senate in January where he will continue his work promoting bills of concern to LOHV members who donated dozens of hours to his campaign.

League of Humane Voters of New York City

The League of Humane Voters of New York City (LOHV-NYC) seeks to mobilize public concern for animals through the democratic political process. We campaign for the election of candidates for public office who will work to enact animal rights legislation. Recognizing that animal exploitation is a political issue and not just a moral one, we intend to make animal rights a mainstream political issue by building support among citizens, activists, political parties, candidates and elected representatives.
